THE BROWN FAMILY

        John Blench Brown was born in Cambridge, England, Apr. 30, 1807 [baptized 18 May 1807 in March Parish, Cambridgeshire], and died in Weaubleau, Hickory County, Mo., Aug. 27, 1886. He came to the United States about the year 1828 with his mother, Mary, arriving through New York, and settled in Franklin county, Mo., where he resided until the autumn of 1853, when he moved with his family to Hickory county, to the farm on which he died. In 1832, in Franklin county, Mo., he married Miss Nancy Catherine Richardson, daughter of Amos Richardson and Nancy Hinton, who was born Oct. 23 [28], 1818 in Franklin Co., MO, and died in Weaubleau, Hickory county, Mo., Sept.[Oct.] 5, 1884. Both are buried in Rountree Cemetery, Elkton, MO, as are John's mother and stepfather, Mary Brown (1786-1874) and Peter Aspling (1776-1870). He married on 13 Aug 1857 Mary Francis Yoast, daughter of George Carmichael Yoast and Barbara Ann [surname unknown]. She was born 29 Apr 1840 in Polk Co., MO; died 17 Apr 1909 in Flemington, Polk Co., MO. They are buried in Rondo Cemetery, Polk Co., MO.

  1. i. Mary Ann Elizabeth, born 27 June 1858 in Polk Co., MO; died 5 Feb 1927 in Flemington, Polk Co., MO; buried in Flemington Cemetery. She married on 14 Oct 1878  Melborn Campbell Mitchell, son of John C. Mitchell and Harriet Frieze. They had eight children: Arthur W., Agnes May, Dora Melvina, Edna Pearl, James Earl, Nora Alice, Orval Milton, and George W.

  2. James Franklin, born 26 Jan 1861 in Polk Co., MO; died 26 Nov 1934 in Polk Co., MO. He married Alice King, born 1869; died 1949. They are buried in Rondo Cemetery.

  3. Nancy Marie, born 18 July 1863 in Humansville, Polk Co., MO; died 28 Dec 1947 in Polk Co., MO. Married on 6 Aug 1892 Thomas Marsh. He was born 8 Aug 1863; died 16 Feb 1945 in Polk Co., MO. They are buried in Flemington Cemetery.

  4. Sarah Alice, born 16 Feb 1867 in Polk Co., MO; died 27 May 1937. Alice married Frank McLaughlin on 28 Feb 1884.

  5. George Blench, born 6 Aug 1869 in Polk Co., MO; died 8 Aug 1941 in Maxwell, Colusa Co., CA; married on 2 Mar 1913 in Maxwell to Mary Jane Andrews, born 1869. They are buried in Maxwell Cemetery.

  6. Elijah E., born 31 Dec 1871 in Humansville, Polk Co., MO; died 25 Mar 1874 in Humansville, Polk Co., MO; buried in Rondo Cemetery.

  7. William Frederick, born 21 Oct 1874 in Polk Co., MO; died 1959; married on 2 Feb 1898 to Leila [surname unknown].

  8. Ora Lee, born 31 Jan 1877 in Flemington, Polk Co., MO; died 19 Jul 1966 in Williams, Colusa Co., CA; buried in Maxwell Cemetery. He married Dora French on 30 Jun 1901 in Rondo, Polk Co., MO. They had three children: Wayne Lee, Mary Lin, and Howard French. The family moved to Delta, Colorado, when Dora was diagnosed with tuberculosis; later settled in Maxwell, CA.

  9. Maud May, born 16 Apr 1880 in Flemington, Polk Co., MO; died 20 Aug 1961 in Maxwell, Colusa Co., CA; buried in Maxwell Cemetery. She married Ira John Piersol (born 1880) on 18 Oct 1906 in Sheridan, WY.

2. William B., born June 27, 1836 in Franklin Co, MO; died at Winfield, Cowley Co., Kan., May 8, 1905; married 26 Aug 1857 in Polk Co., MO, to Nancy Catherine Richardson, daughter of Clayton Burke Richardson and Mary Ann Arnold [born 22 Jun 1842 in Polk Co., MO; died 31 Oct 1903 in Winfield, KS]. In 1874 they moved to Cowley Co., KS, and settled in Winfield when it was a mere trading post. [William and Nancy are pictured at right in undated photo.]

  2. Thomas Clayton, born 1860 in Polk Co., MO; died 1924 in Dexter, Cowley Co., KS; married Caroline Merydith Ridgway [b. 5 Feb 1869 in Mattamoras, OH; d. 1948 in Dexter, Cowley Co., KS]. They had 7 children: William L., Earl P., Guy T., Jack, Orville, Adaline, John Preston, Richard J., Emma Ella, and Alice.

  3. John Preston, born 29 Jun 1868 in Bolivar, Polk Co., MO; died 20 May 1898 in Keil, OK; married in 1892 to Clara D. Burris [b. 5 Feb 1872 in Neosho, KS; d. 11 Feb 1950 in Cleveland, Osage Co., OK]. They are both buried in Dexter, Cowley Co., KS. Their two children, John Homer and Forrest LeRoy, were born in Loyal, Kingfisher Co., OK.

Arnold and sister of Eliza, born 6 Dec 1840 in St. Clair Co., MO; died 24 Jan 1887 in Humansville, Polk Co., MO. Buried in Shady Grove Cemetery near Humansville.

        Amos served in Co. I, 8th Regiment, Cavalry, Missouri State Militia [Union] Volunteers, enlisting on 19 April 1862 at Linn Creek. Mustered out at Springfield in July 1865.

        Elijah P. Brown and Margaret Jane Lively [b. 2 Jun 1857 in IL; d. 11 Sep 1911 in Weaubleau] were married in Waynesville, Pulaski county, Mo., Oct. 8, 1872. Both are buried in Rountree Cemetery. [See E. P.'s obituary at left.]
