Anvil Rock is located in the NE 1/4 of Section 15,Township 38, Range 22 of Hickory County.
It is about 12 feet long and 5 feet wide, jutting from a dolomite workbench"
that rises 20 feet above the wooded hillside.
You will need to go 200 paces southwest from the spring bog where the mastodon bones were excavated to find the rock which is on the flood plain of the Pomme de Terre River.
Anvil Rock was mentioned in Albrecht Koch's published report of the
mastodon dig. The site of the dig might have been lost except for this report stating that the spring bog could be seen from the rock. In the 1970s it seems no one could remember the big rock until finally an old
farmer was found who could remember the rock and its location. This then led to the rediscovery of the spring bog and the new dig.
