His family moved to what is now western Hickory Co., in 1840. James joined the Confederate Army and served under Caleb Dorsey's Cavalry Regiment. Alternate information: All 4 of Shiveral's sons served in the Union Army. James served as a Sergeant in Capt. Human's Co. His brother, Samuel B., also enlisted in the same company on the same day as a Private and was discharged on Feb. 1, 1863 for disability. The youngest son, William R., joined the Union infantry in 1865 when he was barely 18, serving with the 56th Regiment, MO Volunteers; he transferred to the 51st Regiment in April 1865 and mustered out in August 1865. He was captured near St Louis, 15 Sept. 1862, and held at Myrtle Prison. He was moved to Alton IL, released and went back to the Cavalry.

James married Sarah A Martin, 22 July 1863, at Humansville MO. in Polk Co., MO. which was near to where he lived.  Sarah was killed in a buggy accident in 1866. Sarah is buried along with a baby in the Richardson Cemetery, in Polk Co., just south of the Hickory Co. line. He married; Susan Adaline Williams, in 1872.

The Shiveral Hodge family can be found in the 1850 census as family #17, in 1860 as family #492 [without Shiveral, who died in Illinois on 30 Sept. 1858 and is buried next to his brother in Danvers, IL; Shiveral died of cholera while taking a herd of cattle to sell].
